In parts 2 and 3 we discussed going into gyms for the first time. First we talked about shopping around and then we discussed classes and solo sessions.

This time we’ll talk about the ultimate short cut towards stopping the gym from being a scary as hell place. That short cut is getting a Personal Trainer right from the start.

Why would you get a Personal Trainer?

A Personal Trainer (at least a good one) will completely take the fear away from the gym floor. They will tailor your sessions towards your movement and ability level and if you’ve chosen really well they will allow you to leave the gym feeling better than when you came in.

At least sometimes.

Eventually you’ll be able to push yourself enough to really ‘feel’ a workout. Your Personal Trainer is there to teach you how to get there safely!

I’d recommend training with a Personal Trainer for around 6 months until you are comfortable being able to come in and train yourself. For some this may take years and that’s ok too.

A Personal Trainer will be able to tell you that you are doing the right thing.

Knowing you are doing the right thing will be a huge relief. No one likes to feel as if they are potentially looking like an idiot on the gym floor. Knowing that you don’t is such an incredible relief.

A Personal Trainer can stop you falling into any unhealthy habits.

They can make sure you aren’t training too many times. They can drop you a message if you’ve perhaps dropped off the wagon a little bit.

A Personal Trainer can make sure you are doing no damage to yourself.

Most importantly……

THEY CAN MAKE SESSIONS FUN AS HELL.

They can find exercises that you are brilliant at based on your limb lengths. A trainer can keep things varied. A trainer can provide you with support and be someone to listen to on the gym floor.

They can make you train hard.

A trainer can let you know when to back off (because that’s important too.)

Deciding on a trainer is a whole other topic that I promise I’ll deal with in a later blog post.

A Personal Trainer gets you towards your destination far quicker and can make the process much smoother, less stressful and more fun.

And it means you don’t have to focus on every single minute detail of your training because your coach will deal with that side of things.

So if you want the gym to be less scary the best way to go about that is to get a good coach that suffers from an abundance of empathy for someone in your situation.

Join us for the next part where we’ll discuss how to get into free weights and barbell stuff without the assistance of a coach.

Thanks for reading guys!
